History

It started as a small dispensary in the form of a First Aid Centre in the premises of the present medical college during the days of Maratha rule in the late eighteenth century. The purpose of that dispensary was to provide medical assistance to the sick pilgrims en route to and from Jagannath  Puri, especially during Rath Yatra (Car Festival) of Lord Jagannath.In British rule, they realized the strategic importance of this dispensary and converted it into small hospital. For the management of the hospital, they provided money from the “Annachhatra Fund”.In 1875, it converted to Orissa Medical School, Dr William Day Stewart, the then Civil Surgeon of Cuttack as its first principal. Sir Richard Temple and Mr. T.E Ravenshaw, Dr. William Day Stewart also had a great contribution towards the hospital.The Orissa Medical School was renamed as Orissa Medical College in 1944 and Major A.T Anderson, appointed as its first principal,At that time the strength was 22 MBBS Degree students.The college was affiliated to Utkal University in 1948.Medical Council of India recognised the college in the year 1952.Postgraduate courses were started in 1960.Many important people of Orissa have donated a lot for the college. Among them, the help of Maharaja Sri Ramchandra Bhanja Dev of Mayurbhanj state has been very important. He has provided a lot of support in terms of money and land to build this college. That is why in 1951, the Government of Odisha named Cuttack Medical College as Sri Ramachandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in short SCB Medical College And Hospital.

Academics

SCB Medical College And Hospital providing degree courses for MBBS, MD, MS, DM, MCh and various diploma courses like nurshing. The seats for MBBS course is 250 and the postgraduate courses are 150. The dental wing of the college providing B.D.S. degrees. Now the college have postgraduate programmes for 21 broad specialties.M.B.B.S. course is four-and-a-half-year with one-year internship.The college offers 150 seats in post graduate courses.

Library Facility

A student library is inside the campus with more than 500 seats having facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Central Library is the referral medical libraries in the state of Odisha. The library is completely air conditioned. In 1993 it has been declared as a resource library for Eastern India by the Govt. of India.The Central Library,SCB Medical College And Hospital, Cuttack is located in the Academic Block of Sri Ramchandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Library have Student & staff reading Area- on 3rd floor 3200 sq.m, Exterior reading area for Students- in 2nd floor 800 sq.m, Seating capacity of Library, 3rd floor Main reading Hall-Seating arrangement for students- 414, Seating arrangement for staff- 54, 2nd floor Exterior Reading Hall, Seating arrangement for student- 330. e-library facility is available in SCB Medical College And Hospital- 50 internet stations. 11,000 e-journals, 2,000 e-books, 1800 e-theses are also available in the library. Total number of Text & Reference Books- 21,878, Text Books – 11,499, Reference Books – 10379 also available here. Working hours of the library – Working days:9.00 AM – 11 PM and in Holidays:10.00 AM – 5.30 PM. According to sources the annual expenditure of library on reading material approx-80 lakh rupees.

Admission

Admission to SCB Medical College And Hospital is only through NEET. You must have Physics, chemistry and biology on the 12th. Application form is available on the NTA website.Seats allotted 85 percent state quota and 15 percent all India quota basis. other reservations such as PC, SC, and ST are also there. faculties all are Doctors and Professors. Total 4 Medical Board exams conducted in 4.5 years and internal exams are also held in the mean time. The passing percentage is 50 percent.

Hospital

SCB Medical College And Hospital provides treatment facillity through its Outpatient department, Casualty and indoor services. It has its own diagnostic center with MRI and CT scans. The Hospital also has a blood bank and eye bank of its own.

The Government of Orissa has been contributing from time to time for the expansion of this hospital. Meanwhile the population of Orissa has crossed 4 crores. That is why due to lack of space, the Orissa government has built a second campus of the hospital. Till the time of writing this article, the Odisha government has made arrangements of more than Rs 3000 crore in its budget. Due to which the old hospital campus is being given a new look. New buildings, new hostels, staff quarters, roads, etc. are being constructed. Which will be completed very soon.
