In the 16th century, the Portuguese took control of the archipelago. The British took control over these islands and attached to the Malabar district of the Madras Presidency. After British rule on 1 November 1956, during the state reorganization of India, the Lakshadweep islands were separated from Malabar District and made a union territory.
